The Biophysical Instrumentation Facility (BIF) @ MIT houses instrumentation for aiding in the elucidation of macromolecular structures and interactions

The BIF is located in the Koch Biology Building (68-470: https://whereis.mit.edu/) on Ames Street near Kendall Square. The BIF is used by MIT researchers in Chemistry, Biology, Biological Engineering, and Chemical Engineering and is available to all members of the MIT community and beyond.

Prof. Barbara Imperiali established the BIF through funding from the NIH, the NSF, and MIT.

The BIF maintains: a JASCO Circular Dichroism Spectrometer, a Wyatt Dynamic Light Scattering instrument, a Sartorius Octet R8 Biolayer Interferometry system, a Refeyn-One Mass Photometer, a MicroCal Isothermal Titration Calorimeter, and an Agilent HPLC with SEC-MALS system. The BIF has also recently welcomed Prometheus PANTA nanoDSF with parallel DLS.

Dr. Ky Lowenhaupt manages the BIF. Ky is available to train new users and advise those considering the potential application of the instruments in the facility.

For all inquiries, please contact Dr. Ky Lowenhaupt - bif@mit.edu

The BIF is a BL1 facility

We request that you do not bring hazardous or toxic chemicals into the BIF as all of the instruments are on the open bench tops Thank you!
